Travel Dream Job
My best friend said that her idea of a Travel Dream Job would be to work for a food show and travel around the world while eating. While this can be a great job, it is incredibly unlikely that a multimillion dollar network will approach you to do something like this.
Before I left the United States, the majority of my work experience involved investment sales to high net worth clients. If you needed someone to call an old rich guy to sell stocks and bonds, I was your guy. In incredibly profitable skill in the United States is almost useless abroad. Other countries had different rules and regulations in regards to investment sales and my experience limited me to only one country in this world.
Travel Dream Job with this feeling of uselessness, I began my first job search when I first arrived to Australia. The land down under can be a great starting point for those who want to work and travel. Citizens of the US can apply for a visa through their customs website for around 300 dollars. This entitles you to enter into Australia with a tax id number in order to obtain legal work. Because of this program, many Australians like to hire what’s called “backpacker labor”. Many farmers and tradesmen like to hire backpackers due to their affinity to do jobs that Australians won’t.
When I arrived to Australia, I gave myself two criteria for my job search. I wanted to do something that I’ve never done before and it had to be dangerous. Google answered my question and criteria with working on an Australian cattle station. After several inquiries and phone calls over the next few days, I found a station owner who was willing to hire me and fly me out on a 5 month commitment.
Over the next six months, I learned how to ride a motorcycle, process cattle and run from bulls that have ever intention of ending your life. My legs were constantly covered in cuts and bruises from the daily accident that would befall me. Danger was definitive factor of this type of work. Our days off were spent drinking beers and avoiding the heat.
On one Sunday morning where we didn’t have to work, I sat with the rest of the crew discussing what we would do on our day off. I nominated the idea that we take turns riding a bull so that I could experience something I imagined since childhood. Some things look really simple on television and the movies but when you’re sitting on the back of a 600 pound animal that is focusing on getting rid of you, it’s hard. I lasted about a second and a half and sprained my ankle in the process. The bull missed me as I managed to climb over the wall with only the use of one leg and my arms.
The working tourist visa was all I needed in order to obtain an Australian bank account. Our wages from the cattle station were direct deposited into our accounts. Months went by while we had nothing to spend our money on. At the end of my time there, I saved a substantial amount of money to use towards my traveling. It was an experience that I’d never forget that also paid well.
Wherever you go in this world, If you can teach English or be able to handle manual labor, someone is usually willing to pay you for it. Australia is a good option for beginners who want to work legally with documentation. Aside from dangerous cattle stations, work can be found on fruit farms for people who are willing to pack fruit for 12 hours a day. For many women who speak other languages, affluent Australian families like to hire a foreign Au Pair(babysitter) for their children so that they can be exposed to another culture.
Currently there is a large draw in Australia for unskilled labor due to the mining boom. An average person with only a high school diploma has the earning potential of at least $75,000 per year. However, there are certainly downsides to these high paying jobs. You’ll spend your time away from civilization for weeks at a time. The inherent dangers of mining work are also present in your average work day. This industry has one of the higher fatality rates in Australia. After 3 weeks of work without a break, you can spend a week off doing whatever you like. Since housing and food are provided for you, you have your entire paycheck to spend on your time off.
Australia’s healthy economy has made it a gold mine for those from economically depressed countries such as Ireland and Greece. Many end up staying here due to their nice wages and 1st world infrastructure. Being that the minimum wage is around 17 per hour, earning power in this country is substantially one of the highest in the world.
For myself, I wouldn’t say that I have a certain dream job that beats out everything else. With all the options available to us on this planet, it would be a major disservice to not try out different experiences.
